Writer's Retreat
Introduction
On this page you will find details of two completely different retreat options for the writer who seeks peace and solitude. A writer sometimes needs to become a hermit in order to focus, find direction, and embrace their writing away from everyday distractions. And where better than the beautiful mountains of Andalucia? Where sun, natural light, warmth, relaxation and a sparkling sea tempt your creativity to play.

Detailed below are two accommodation venues; the first is located in the mountains near an exquisite Andalucian village and has been specifically set up to accommodate writers on retreat. At Llano de la Luz you will meet other writers and stay in a Moorish style house owned by fellow writer Jacqueline Crooks, who is there with you to support your stay. The other retreat is a self-contained village house about ten minutes from the coast. Casa Tranquila offers privacy, beauty and rustic charm in a tiny, very Spanish hamlet. For more details and photos on each venue read below:

Llano De La Luz
Nestled in the heart of the Andalucian mountains is the beautiful retreat centre Llano de la Luz, which translates as land of light. Hidden in the picturesque village of Comares, the retreat is the ideal place to explore and develop your writing. The added bonus and unique extra is that the book doctor is on hand for private consultations about your writing. The retreat is perfect for:
  • Short and long term lets
  • Individuals or small teams of writers
  • Writers who want to start, finish or make headway on their book or screenplay
  • Writers who don't want the structure of a workshop but who respond to personalised writing support from the book doctor
  • Writers who are inspired by natural beauty
Set Up
Llano de la Luz writers retreat centre is run by Jacqueline Crooks and Khalid Haq. Jacqueline has experience of running Women's Holistic Retreats in London. Khalid is an Osteopath who has been in practice for 10 years, operating from his own established health centre.

Llano de la Luz is available for short and long term rentals throughout the year. Affordable rents make it the perfect place for writers, sabbaticals and long vacations.

The accommodation reflects the beauty and history of Andalucia with a modern Moroccan-style living space. Double, twin-bedded and single rooms are available. In addition, private writing terraces with stunning views to valleys of almond and olive groves are available to all writers. The accommodation is self-catering and guests share a kitchen/diner.

See www.writersretreat.gbr.cc for more details including the rates.

"We do not write because we want to; we write because we have to."
W. Somerset Maugham

The Book Doctor
The Added Bonus:
In addition to the beauty of being on a writing retreat, is the unique extra of having the Book Doctor on hand. Most writers treasure the time they spend alone on retreats but there are times when we can miss the company of someone else. Someone who can offer-professional feedback and advice on your writing.

As the on-call Book Doctor I can help edit, shape and develop your writing with you. As an additional complimentary therapy I also offer support, advice and motivation. The Book Doctor is an added luxury to your writing retreat. Someone who will treat you and your dreams with the utmost respect. Someone who will listen to you as you enthuse about your writing and your book. Someone who will offer invaluable advice not only about the current project but also about your individual writing technique. Someone who will make the goal of publication a far more realistic outcome than if you were working solo.

To get the maximum benefit from your writing retreat, making an appointment with the Book Doctor will ensure you reach, succeed and smash your targets. Achieving your writing dreams has never been simpler or as much fun as a retreat combined with the book doctor.

"Get a Professional Second Opinion on Your Writing"

How Does It Work?
I advise a free initial consultation over the phone or via email to discuss your needs and rates prior to arriving at the retreat. If we decide for me to read your material before arrival this will be charged at the hourly rate. For your maximum benefit I advise a minimum of four sessions whilst you are here. Each session lasts one hour. Payment for the Book Doctor service is separate from the accommodation rental. For more information or to find out details about my rates please contact me via email in the first instance.

Writers on retreat like to have face to face meetings lasting either an hour or two hours once a week. During the meeting I read through any writing and go through your progress, goal setting for the next meeting. Any reading outside of these meetings are charged as an extra.

The Area
Llano de la Luz Retreat Centre is set in the mountain village of Comares. The nearest airport is Malaga, about an hour's drive away. Comares is one of the highest pueblo blancos (white villages) in Andalucia and is 739 metres above sea level. The centre is only a ten minute walk from the nearest town, Los Ventorros, where you will find a friendly local restaurant/bar and also a lovely artesan shop selling pottery, home made oils and herbal concotions. The village was one of the principle defensive bastions of Omar Ben Hafsun during the early times of the Moorish caliphs and the village retains much of its Moorish structure, from its narrow cobbled streets interspersed with arches to the colourful ceramic plaques. The views from Comares are incredible.

Comares old town is where olive oil, wine and raisins are produced. Its streets are narrow and winding, with steep hills on different levels. The main plaza has a lovely area for sitting with panoramic views all around. The square is well served with small local bars and restaurants.

The Accommodation
Mountain View Room
This room looks out onto the valley of majestic mountains. It is a twin bedded room with Moroccan features. A large private terrace set with tables, chairs and antique Indian bed-lounger. At dusk if you leave the window open, you will be able to hear the gentle tinkling of goat bells as small herds graze in the distance. All rooms have desks.

Moroccan Room
A single room beautifully decorated with charming Moroccan pieces. The furniture has been made by a talented Spanish cabinet maker. The room is directly above the fire place downstairs, and is very cosy. All rooms have desks

The Classic Room
Double room with a fantastic view of the valley. A wonderful double bed made by a talented Spanish cabinet maker. Antique Spanish rug sets the scene. All rooms have desks. Private writing terrace with views into the valley.

Client Feedback
"You were very welcoming and caring, without being intrusive, which I think is vital. I think you got the balance between leaving guests to themselves and offering support very well."
Christine, Liverpool.

"El Llano de la Luz is indeed a place of light. I stayed in a room with stunning mountain views, with my own balcony, and finally found the peace to embark on my writing project. Jacqueline was a most gracious and warm-hearted hostess, driving me in and out of the village of Comares - a wonder of labyrinthine white streets and Moorish architecture - and even organizing Spanish lessons with a delightful local teacher. An unforgettable time, an oasis of Andalucian beauty and peace."
Vivienne, Paris.

La Casa Tranquila
This charming Spanish house is owned by a writer and painter partnership. As you would expect from such a creative duo, the house is artfully decorated and is quite simply a box of delights the minute you open the front door. It has plenty of writing spaces, be it the living room, the dining room, the kitchen, the study or the secluded inner patio and can happily accommodate two to three people. There is a large bathroom with two showers, an outside toilet and shower, gas heating and cooking, BBC and ITV reception and a computer desk for laptops.

La Casa Tranquila is found in the tiny hamlet of Los Iberos, about 1.5kms from the Autovia Mediterraneo along a good tarmac road. This rustic Spanish casita is only 3kms from the sparkling Mediterrean sea where sandy beaches and outside cafes can be enjoyed at the coastal town of Benajarafe. About 8kms in the other direction is the bustling town of Torre del Mar where you can stock your fridge up in the supermarkets, eat out in restaurants, or simply walk along the seafront and indulge in an ice-cream. There is good shopping both here and in the shopping mall a little further out of town.

The hamlet is peaceful and as such perfect for writers, especially in the early mornings. Only 35-40 minutes from the airport but tucked away in the valleys a hired car is recommended for this retreat. Minimum lets of two or three weeks although the house is available for two-month lets and is especially attractive to those who want to come over for the Christmas and the Summer months. Moderate rates. Contact Hannah for availability.

As per Llano de la Luz Hannah is available for individual writing sessions. For information on this read the "The Book Doctor" section above. If you are interested in either of these retreats please contact Hannah in the first instance.
